As we head into a new year, it’s hard not to get swept up in all the ads and advice about making big changes. Everywhere you look, there are tips on weight loss, better health, and achieving more. But here’s the reality: Only 9% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions, and only 1% stick with them for the entire year.
When I saw those stats, it made me pause. Clearly, people need more support to create lasting change and live their best lives. So many of us set ambitious goals, only to feel discouraged by February when we don’t see the quick results we hoped for. And honestly, it’s no wonder so many give up — we’re tackling goals all wrong.
Rethinking Goal-Setting: Why Winter is the Perfect Season for Reflection
We’ve been conditioned to believe that January is all about jumping headfirst into our goals. We ride the wave of that New Year buzz, full of excitement and motivation. But here’s the thing: Lasting change doesn’t happen overnight, and you don’t need to tackle everything at once.
Instead, I want you to think about this current season — winter — as your foundation-building time. Winter is naturally a slower, more reflective season. It’s a time to pause, take stock of where you are, and start laying the groundwork for what’s to come. Think of it like planting seeds. The growth might not be visible right away, but the work you’re doing now will bloom beautifully when the time is right.
The Shift from Quick Results to Sustainable Change
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to do too much, too fast. They set lofty goals and expect immediate results, only to burn out and give up. But what if we shifted our approach?
This year, I want you to think about your goals as a journey, not a sprint. Instead of rushing to achieve everything at once, let’s take a seasonal approach. Use this winter season to:
Reflect on what worked and what didn’t last year.
Plan the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.
Build a foundation that will set you up for success in the long term.
By taking your time and pacing yourself, you’re more likely to create lasting habits and see meaningful progress. The goal is to be in full bloom by summer, feeling confident and accomplished without burnout or stress.
